Frequently Asked Questions
Q: “What program is right for me?”
A: Canada offers programs in every major discipline of study, so there is a program for everyone. Programs usually take 2-4 years to complete. If you have questions about programs, or would like to discuss programs with a Can Study Canada guidance counselor, book your free counseling session today!
Q: “Do I need to take a Language Test?”
A: In most cases, yes, you need to take a language test before applying to university or college. The most common tests required are the TOEFL and IELTS tests. If you fear writing a language test because you think your English language skills need work, perhaps you should consider an English as Second Language (ESL) school in Canada. ESL schools are designed to improve your English and prepare you for university or college.
Q: “What is the difference between college and university?”
College:
- Majority of programs last 2-3 years, after which you receive a diploma or certificate. A degree can also be earned in some college programs.
- Program focus is a practical, hands-on approach. By focusing on technical skills, a college education prepares students for fast entrance to the professional field.
- Tuition is usually less expensive than that of a university.
- Some programs are designed to combine class studies with paid employment (co-operative studies).
- Some college programs can be combined with university programs.
- Most trade skill certifications can be obtained from colleges.
University:
- Graduates earn a Bachelor degree after 3-4 years.
- Program focus is based on theory. This approach is designed to refine a student’s critical thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills.
- Canadian universities are internationally known and respected. Presently, there are two Canadian universities ranked in the top 100 in the world.
- Undergraduate courses commonly have several teachers’ assistants (TA’s) in addition to a course professor. These TA’s are usually PHD or Master’s students that oversee and provide assistance to students in group settings or individual appointments.
- Unlike most colleges, universities offer a variety of degrees such as Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Masters, Doctorate (PhD).
English as a Second Language School (ESL):
- Most universities and colleges require language test scores when applying. If your speaking, reading, writing or comprehension skills in English are weak, you should consider attending one of Canada’s ESL schools. A good ESL school is the best way to raise your English language skills to the university level. Can Study Canada can recommend an ESL school. Just ask!
Q: “How can I increase my chance of acceptance to a Canadian school?”
A: It’s best to have the following documents and arrangements prepared:
1) Official high school, and/or university transcripts
2) Officially translated copy of transcripts (if in language other than French or English).
3) Recent completion of an official language proficiency test. Preferred scores for IELTS is 6.5+ and for TOEFL is 80+.
4) A bank account in your name holding a minimum of $25,000 CDN.

Q: “I do not meet all the listed requirements to come to Canada. What do I do?”
A: Don’t give up hope. Immigration and institution requirements are often strict but, with a little hard work and help, there are ways to fulfill them. Let us know what requirements you lack and we will be happy to help you in any way we can.
Q: “I scored poorly in my language test. Can you help me?”
A: Many universities and colleges in Canada offer courses that are designed for international students specifically. These courses help you improve your English and learn other skills that will help you succeed at your Canadian school. If you are a resident of Toronto we can offer comprehensive language instruction.
Q: “Can I work or live in Canada after I graduate?”
A: The immigration laws in Canada have recently changed in favour of international students. As an international student you will be able to work on campus without a permit, and with the new immigration policies, you can even obtain an off-campus work permit. Also, depending on which program you graduate from, you may immediately apply for residency in Canada upon finishing your studies.
